In 2010 the Long Island community on behalf of HIA-LI to benefit Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Foundation raised over 95,000 pounds of food in our annual food drive.
95,000 pounds of food went to create 74,000 meals.
To put it in a more realistic prospective, for every 100 dollars donated, 282 meals are purchased. This equates to 361 pounds of food.
For every 100 lbs of food 78 meals are provided to people on Long Island in Need.

We have a new video created for the HIA-LI Food Drive It is only one minute in length. It shows how “one can could make a difference”.
There is a great video recorded for the 2010 food drive that is less than 5 minutes in length and features a food drive co-chair Alex Canaan and the Director of Long Island Cares Paule Pachter.

How to begin: 100 pounds or $100
Between May and September, a period of 5 months, participating companies are asked to fill at least one barrel of food that weighs an average of 100 pounds.
We realize that not all companies have the number of employees to always send back a full barrel so if a full barrel is worth $100 we ask (for example) that a half filled barrel also include a donation of $50. That averages out to a company wide donation of around $20 per month for the 5 months.
Many companies fill their barrel much faster and ask for a new empty barrel to replace the full one. Depending on the size of your company it may be much easier to make a larger impact on the outcome of the food drive.
Call HIA-LI at 631-543-5355 to request a barrel or express your interest in participating.
